Burn in testing the Purplest SNES ever and further enpurpling it (with video)

By Gavin Davies

I repaired this purple SNES about 3 years ago - it just needed a new fuse - and sold it on. It got returned to me, presumably because game loading isn’t that reliable so it was probably assumed broken. I don’t recall what the stated reason was.

So, 3 years on, I took it apart and checked it. I rehomed it in an EVEN MORE PURPLE aftermarket SNES shell, and ran the SNES burn-in cart, which is an aftermarket cart that includes all kinds of utilities - some of which I guess are from Nintendo in the 90s and some of which are community made, including the 240p suite. The cart showed that the SNES works fine.

So the question is - to replace the cartridge port or not? The aftermarket ones I bought look fairly crummy and they’re not like the original 2-piece SNES design, so I could end up grafting really hard to get the cartridge port off the board and solder a new one on, and have the carts sit at the wrong height, and it might still not fix the fault!
